Pores 101:

The big myth about pores is that they can be shrunk- the unfortunate truth is that only way to prevent severely enlarged pores is to use preventative skincare and load up on your SPF protection. When sun damage occurs, pores can become enlarged as collagen in the skin is depleted, along with a host of other issues one could prevent by, y’know, wearing sunscreen.

Another far-reaching pore myth is that those things on your nose are blackheads- they’re actually sebaceous filaments, and they’re an essential part of the skin’s anatomy. The unsightly dark spots you’re noticing is actually oxidized sebum. Blackheads are the thicker plugs (ew, sorry) of sebum that occur elsewhere on the face. Don’t worry, though: you can fight blackheads and sebaceous filament oxidation proactively by stocking your routine with plenty of antioxidants. These magical compounds are found in some of our favorite skincare and will literally prevent oxidation- thus their name! Two of our favorites are the Lindsay Vitamin C Serum and the LJH Propolis Ampoule.

Using a superpowered makeup primer to create a barrier that keeps makeup from settling in the pores is also a great tip. Our beloved and oft-blogged about J. One Jelly Pack helps to plump and firm the skin, minimize the appearance of pores and grips makeup for a super smooth, long wearing finish.

Making sure to hydrate the skin effectively with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, artichoke and some skin-identical oils is also important. The pore-busting Artichoke Essence contains a whopping 60% Artichoke extract that helps cells to retain moisture and literally aids in building cell density from the inside- making it a miracle for sagging pores.

Our recipe for super-clear pores:

A tailored blackhead and sebaceous filament busting routine will keep pores clear and therefore less noticeable. Our favorite pore-clearing routine starts with an Aqua Peeler, which contains both AHA and oil-soluble BHA to work deep inside the pore, helping to unglue (Christine’s favorite word!) dead skin cells and sebum. We like to leave the aqua peeler formula on the face for about 8-10 minutes, then slather on a thin layer of a gentle clay mask. The clay mask will draw impurities to the surface of the skin that the Aqua Peeler has started to unglue.

Rinse the clay mask from the face after 5 minutes (make sure never to leave a clay mask on for longer than 5 minutes to prevent drying and stripping the skin). Apply a layer of your favorite cleansing oil to the face, and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then, begin to gently massage the skin in an upward, circular motion with just the fingertips- the oil will actually help to loosen some sebum and dead skin cells from the pores, rolling them away. After a gentle massage lasting no longer than 5 minutes, rinse the cleansing oil from your face and use an ultra gentle foaming cleanser to clean everything up. Voila! Clearer pores and brighter skin. 🙂

I have a quick question, after the foaming cleanser do you want to apply any moisturizer? I'm not prone to acne, but I do get pore buildup (like anyone) and feel the need for a deep clean, but my skin tends to dry out easily. Would it mess up the whole thing to apply a light moisturizer after this routine?
