After we first launched one-time use rubber masks last year, the craze hasn’t shown any signs of stopping. And I get it, I truly do. There’s a reason this treatment has been a Korean spa staple for years on end. Despite the countless sheet masks and masks I’m constantly testing, my go-to on weekend spa nights is always a rubber mask – Vitamin if my skin feels a little dull, or Charcoal, if my skin feels a little congested. I’m addicted to the fun DIYing of the rubber mask ‘batter’, the soothing coolness during application and the satisfaction of peeling it off in one fluid piece and revealing brighter, purified skin underneath.
We’ve already done a rubber masking step-by-step deep dive on our blog and you can also watch our one minute YT tutorial here, so we won’t go through the standard usage tips again. Instead, I’d like to give you my tips – gathered from months of hands on experience – on how to have the best rubber masking experience possible.
a. Double Cleanse First
This actually applies to any mask, but your skin needs to be cleansed – preferably double cleansed – before a treatment so that the mask can be absorbed efficiently into skin. Any residue dirt, grime, makeup and sunscreen are elements that will block the mask from penetrating into skin plus, in the case of sheet masks and rubber masks that create an evaporation-free ‘seal’ on the skin, you don’t want these impurities trapped underneath! b. Brownie Batter
The best drip-free consistency for rubbermasking is to get it as similar as possible to a dense brownie batter. This means you have carefully add water to just below the indentation in the rubber masking cup and blend swiftly. Too much water and you’ll end up with a drippy, watery mess that won’t congeal. A good rule of thumb is that the ‘batter’ will still look moist but will not drip off your spoon when held up.
c. A splash of essence
The sea kelp-derived alginate in the formula congeals when in contact with water to create the rubbery texture of these masks. One tip that I got from the founder herself was to add a splash of your favorite treatment essence to the cup for an extra dose of skin-caring nutrients. (Still being mindful of the brownie batter texture of course!) I’ve done this type of rubber mask cocktailing with the Blithe 8 Beans Pulp Essence a few times, and have been loving the results. I use at least 5~7 drops of the essence formula each time.
d. Selfie After
We’ve gotten an email or two from customers that they didn’t have enough time to apply the rubber mask on their face before it rubberized in the cup. The trick is to use the spatula to apply broad sweeps across the face, starting with the oilier forehead, then the cheeks. (This video is from a derm office treatment I got in Korea but is a great reference for broad application strokes!) Also after you’ve created a rubber mask mixture this is not the best time to do an extended photo session as it’s important to apply a relatively moist mixture to the skin asap – save selfie time for the much cooler after shot.
e. Thicker the Better
Sharing is caring, but not in the case of #rubbermasking. These one-time use cups were designed for exactly that – one time use. In order to easily lift off the mask afterwards, a rubber mask needs to be applied in a thick layer all over the face. Making the edges slightly thicker will also help to get the rubber mask off even more easily. You can also apply the rubber mask over the lips and neck as well. Skimping on the rubber mask during application will result in a more laborious removal process afterwards and the whole point of the rubber mask is that it has all of the benefits of the peel off mask without the potential irritation factor.
