Daniel Martin Beauty Master Class Recap

We were so honored to have celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin host a master class at Glow Studio Downtown! With clients such as Jessica Alba, Olivia Palermo, Ali Larter, and Greta Gerwig, it’s a no-brainer to say that Daniel knows his way around a face for any occasion or situation. Our studio was filled with laughter as Daniel candidly shared his experiences and expertise to a packed room of curious beauty enthusiasts. For those who were unable to join us, here are our key takeaways from all of Daniel’s beauty wisdom.

1. But skin first!

Right off the bat, Daniel could not stress enough the importance of skincare. Since the theme of the class was ‘how to achieve a flawless complexion,’ it was fitting that he talk about how to take care of the base of all makeup: skin.

From his experience, Daniel understands how to adapt makeup for every lighting setup, whether he paints a face for a glossy editorial or perfects a red carpet look. However, as camera and film technology advances to higher resolutions and pixel counts, skin and skin texture can no longer hide underneath makeup. Even under a veil of foundation, skin’s texture will show through in HD cameras. Now more than ever, skincare comes first, especially for his celebrity clientele who are constantly in the limelight and being photographed.

The basis of any great makeup look is to have great skin to begin with! Some of Daniel’s top picks:

2. Match your skincare and makeup

To find that harmonious balance between natural skin and makeup, Daniel suggested taking a look at the ingredients of your skincare and makeup. The two processes should be compatible in order avoid common woes such as product pilling, uneven coverage, or dry patches. What this means is if your makeup is water-based, then your skincare should also be water-based, and vice versa. Same goes for oil-based makeup and skincare. Trouble can arise when water-based skincare is layered underneath oil-based makeup since water and oil don’t mix! So, double-check your products when you’re layering them on for a long-lasting, natural finish.

3. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

For natural makeup, there is no need to do an entire face! Daniel recommends practicing restraint by only treating problem areas to feature your features that already look great on their own. Case in point: Daniel name-dropped Olivia Palermo and shared how he balances her natural skin with makeup for an overall glowy look. With oily or combination skin like Olivia’s, Daniel recommends using just the slightest amount of powder on the T-zone to mattify the area that needs it most, and then to leave the rest of the face un-powdered for a natural glow around the C-zone near the eyes and cheekbones.

4. Glow, baby glow

Piggybacking off the last tip, you can highlight and add an extra boost of dewiness to that C-zone with your skincare! Mix a couple drops of the glow-creating LJH Vita Propolis Ampoule into your foundation, or gently tap it in on top of makeup for instant glow. Daniel referenced one specific editorial look he created with the Vita Propolis Ampoule in his kit:

Just look at that glow

5. How to cover blemishes and acne

Daniel was full of concealing tips we had never heard of or considered before, especially for covering pesky redness and acne. One of the most interesting makeup tips was to prime your acne before makeup! Using an eyeshadow primer on acne will help to absorb oils. Once the primer is completely dried down, apply concealer as normal. The primer will help to affix the concealer, and voila!
