When the mercury tops 80, it’s all about a frosty facial indulgence. Our cooling treat of choice is a freshly mixed rubber mask. Not only does your skin reap all the benefits of the mask’s ingredients, it also gets the benefits of the cooling effect of the mask itself. It’s the perfect hot-weather self-care treat to whip up. One of our mask go-to brands, MD’s Pick, is launching three new rubber masks — spirulina, berry, and charcoal. These next-generation water rubber masks leave your skin radiant, hydrated, and super soft.

Spirulina is a good choice for skin healing. Don this mask if you’re in the recovery stages of a breakout or just need to infuse your skin with nutrients. The blue-green algae is a superfood that is super nutritious, thanks its eight essential amino acids. It’s also protein-rich, which helps with cell repair and growth. Fatty acids help promote skin’s structure and decrease inflammation, in addition to being a rich source of antioxidants, which help fight free radicals.

The berry iteration is a vitamin-rich mix known for its brightening capabilities. Berries are high in vitamins C, B, K, fiber, folic acid, potassium and amino acids. Use this one if your skin is looking sallow or dull. It’s especially great after a weekend of overindulgence or post-air travel.

Charcoal helps draw out toxins from the skin and is so good at doing so, it’s administered to emergency room patients who have ingested poisonous substances. Charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, and dirt to the skin’s surface. It’s a great choice if you’re acne prone or susceptible to clogged pores. Use this mask when you want a flawless complexion before a night out.

Rubber masks are a longtime staple in Korea, but they’ve become more popular stateside in the past year or two. One thing to note: They don’t actually contain rubber, this just refers to the consistency being rubber-like. Rubber masks are fun because you get to DIY a fresh mask any time you like. They come with a powder you mix either with water or an accompanying essence, then spread it all over your face. They contain alginate, which congeals when you add water. This lets the mask become gelatinous, so you can peel it off once it dries.

A great time to use a rubber mask is when you’ve been out all day in the heat, soaking up those UV rays. Obviously, you’re wearing sunscreen, but perhaps you need a little more oomph in your skincare regimen than a sheet mask would supply. That’s the perfect time to whip up a rubber mask. They create an evaporation-proof seal on the skin once you apply them, so your skin absorbs all the active ingredients. Once you’ve had your mask on long enough (usually 10-20 minutes), peeling it off helps remove impurities from the skin’s surface. It’s the ideal antidote to sun-ravaged summer skin.
