After what felt like seven months straight of winter dullness and skin that’s decidedly devoid of luminosity, we’re ready to remedy the effects of brisk, blustery weather on our complexions. To bring out skin’s brightness after being ravaged by the elements during the colder months, it’s all about a simple spring skin care routine.
“As your clothes get lighter so should your moisturizer; when you start wearing a cardigan instead of a coat, switch out that heavier cream for a springtime moisturizer,” says Connecticut dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara.
The skincare strategy here is more normal than formal. It’s all about ensuring we’re thoroughly removing makeup, addressing acne, purging pores, and caring for our skin so as to stave off future fine lines and wrinkles. Here’s what to incorporate into your spring skincare arsenal now to get ready for when that warmer weather (and, fingers crossed, sunny skies) finally arrives.
Cleanse But Don’t Strip
“The spring/summer gleam, reminds me that I need to add on an extra clean,” says Gohara. She says that double cleansing is a great idea, as temperatures rise — “this way you know that dirt, grime, makeup and sweat (first cleanse) don’t block those pores that need a little love too (second cleanse),” she explains. Try a first round with Make P:rem Clean Me. Black Cleansing Water, a makeup melter that hydrates the skin thanks to its black peat moss water-spiked formula. Then, a foaming cleanser like Whamisa By Glow Recipe Green Tea Foaming Cleansing Gel washes away impurities and purifies pores while leaving skin feeling fresh without stripping away moisture. Remember: Even if your skin is extra oily, you don’t want to take away hydration or risk breakouts galore.
Pick A Power Combo
If you’re dry or concerned with fine lines, you may want to layer a serum under your moisturizer. Serums, thanks to their more absorbent consistency, deliver a more potent punch of active ingredients (i.e. those ingredients that treat issues, rather than just hydrate) directly into the skin. You want to apply a small amount of both products while your skin is still damp post-washing for maximum effectiveness. One combo to try? Dynamic duo Blithe Gold Apricot Pressed Serum layered under Make P:rem Safe Relief Cream works well for all types of skin.
Eye Cream Is Essential
Never forget eye cream! Apply it morning and night in a wing shape underneath the eyes, all the way towards your temples to keep crows’ feet at bay. Don’t forget to apply to your lids as well. We are partial to Whamisa Organic Flowers Eye Essence, a treatment that features fermented flower extracts to brighten and visibly minimize fine lines as it firms the eye area. Or try this hack: You can also use a thicker moisturizer as eye cream in a pinch.
Don’t Neglect Your SPF
This is a vital step, not just in the warmer months, but year-round. Always apply a layer of SPF over your moisturizer and reapply throughout the day. “The sun rays are getting stronger so it is time to up your SPF game,” Gohara notes. “You can multitask by using a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher — or just add on sunscreen as the last step before makeup,” she explains. “One way or another, make sure it is part of your daily routine, rain or shine — remember that 90% of the signs of aging and skin cancer come from daily unprotected UV exposure.” Make P:rem Capsule Sun Gel gives you lightweight protection of broad spectrum SPF 50+ without that white cast of greasy, pore-clogging formulas. This one dries clear for all skin tones and is formulated with birch sap and sea buckthorn, ivy leaf, and sunflower seed extracts to moisturize and nourish the skin. Layer it by itself if you have oily skin, or over your go-to serum or moisturizer if your skin is on the drier side.
Follow these simple skincare shifts and you can be sure your complexion will be dewy, healthy, and happy all season long.
