How-To: DIY Cotton Pad Mask

We’ve made it to day 4 of our #MondaytoFridayMasking challenge! Have you been keeping up with us? Today, we show you a quick way to to make some do-it-yourself masks with products that are already in your skincare collection.

It’s 3pm in the Glow Recipe offices and our skin would appreciate a little midday pick-me-up. Instead of doing full sheet masks like yesterday, we made DIY masks with soaked cotton pads. These little patches are customizable and can target your specific skincare concerns. Dry in the cheeks? Slap on an essence-soaked cotton pad on the apples of your cheeks.

Cotton pads usually come in rounds or rectangles, but we cut ours into heart shapes <3

Note: some cotton pads are designed to split easily into many layers. The cotton pads used in our photos were pulled apart into two thinner layers. However, any shape or size – round or square, thick or thin – will work for this tutorial!

Step 1: Dampen your cotton pad with a mist

It’s super important that the cotton pad is wet enough easily adhere to skin. An easy way to prep the cotton pad is by first spraying it with a mist until slightly translucent (it’s around 10-15 mists).  To forego the misting process, you can also just wet the pad with plain water until it is translucent.

Step 2: Dispense product onto pad

After your cotton pad is sufficiently soaked, add your desired product onto the pad. We recommend using liquid products that can easily soak into the pad and absorb into skin. Here are some suggestions:

Essence Toner

Quickly and easily hydrate skin with easy packs. Essence toners are especially great for DIY masks as they provide treatment for the skin and are easy to apply. Dispense a few drops all over the cotton pad and adhere to skin with the essence side touching skin.
We used Whamisa’s Deep Rich Essence Toner mixed with Blossom Jeju’s Pink Camellia Soombi Essence Serum, though any essence, toner, or serum combination works too – it’s all about creating a mask that suits you!

Splash Masks

We’re big fans of the splash mask and love to find new, innovative ways of using this already innovative product. You can amp up the power of the splash mask by using the cotton pad application method. Dilute a half-capful into an 8 oz. glass of water and dip the cotton pad into the solution, soaking it all the way through. Squeeze out any excess liquid and place onto target areas of face.

Step 3: Place onto face

Make sure to place the cotton pad with the products touching the face. These should be wet enough to adhere to skin, but not so wet that you’re dripping everywhere. Place anywhere and everywhere! For an essence cotton pad, we recommend leaving it on skin for 10 minutes. With the splash mask pads, we recommend leaving it on for up to 5 minutes – no need to wash off! (Since the splash mask contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), be sure to use a sunscreen after using it!) After masking, continue with your regular skincare routine.

Give this a try and let us know how it goes!

Get your glow on,
Cathy
